Accounting, as a science as well as a practice, is shifting from an overriding concern for balance expansion to a preoccupation with profitability, rates of return on capital and risk control.

Product profitability, customer profitability and organizational unit profitability must be obtained and maintained.

Usually these different “dimensions” of profitability are related to each other, and interesting patterns can be discovered by an analyst using Olap tools, or “magically” by data-mining algorithms.

Often, simply cross-tabulating values, e.g. Account vs Organization, provides useful insights to the business manager.
